Hello Handsome! 15 Essential Oils For Beards (Plus 3 Tips)
You’re proud of your facial hair—and why shouldn’t you be? You grew it yourself! Whether you’re going for something neat and sleek or you’re rocking a look that really puts the “bear” in beard, taking care of your facial hair is key. And if your new grooming regimen also leaves you smelling incredible, that’s even better.
Essential oils will be a great tool in your beard-grooming arsenal. Not only can they moisturize and create a swoon-worthy scent, but many of these oils have properties that also benefit hair and skin.
1. Be sweet to your skin.
Even if you’ve had facial hair for so long that you haven’t seen your upper lip in decades, there is skin under there—we promise. Proper skin care will help with itchiness and beardruff—dandruff in your beard. Taking care of your skin can even help with ingrown hairs, dryness, and acne. Here are some tips for being sweet to your skin, even when it’s hidden from view.
Skin care for beards:
- Exfoliate—yes, even under the hair! Try our Satin Facial Scrub™ to gently lift and remove dry, dead skin cells.
- Tackle beardruff with dandruff shampoo.
- Moisturize your skin and facial hair with beard oil. What’s beard oil, you ask? Keep reading!
2. Tame the tangle with beard oil.
Beard oil—which despite the name is also great for mustaches, 1830s-era muttonchops, and everything in between—keeps your facial hair looking sleek and polished. It’s like the difference between a well-tended field and a tangled jungle full of cookie crumbs. Making your own is easier than you think!
Ingredients:
- 2-ounce glass bottle
- Your favorite carrier oils
- 30-40 drops of essential oil
Instructions:
1. Fill the bottle about ¾ full of carrier oil. Use a funnel if necessary.
YL tip: You can use just one carrier oil—like jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, or coconut oil—or any combination you’d like. Learn more about carrier oils here.
2. Add essential oils. See recommended oils below.
3. Mix together. Shaken, not stirred. (Just kidding! You can stir it if you really want to.)
4. Store in a cool, dry place with the lid screwed on tightly.
To use:
Put 2-3 drops in your palm and rub through your beard to smooth flyaways and add shine. Remember to avoid your mouth and nostrils—unless you want them to shine too.

3. Find your signature scent.
One of the best parts about mixing up your own beard oil is customizing the scent. You can choose your own adventure: rugged woodcutter or suave world traveler? You can even create multiple options to match your mood!
If you really want to tap into your inner scent scientist—or cologne mogul—go the extra mile and create a well-rounded scent using top, middle, and bottom notes. Check out this blog post for tips!
